Chapter Seventeen

Grant pulled up in front of the Sheriff’s Office, flew out of the Yukon and bounded up the stairs. At this time of night there were two deputies on duty, but Roberta had gone home for the day. The night dispatcher, Andrea Marsal gave him a nod. He nodded in reply, ignored the questioning looks from Atwater and Mills, and made his way to the bunkroom.

Daniel opened the door after the second knock. “Grant.”

“Daniel.” Grant held up his phone that displayed the picture of Autumn and the visitor. “Recognize this guy?”

Daniel scrutinized the photograph. “No, should I?”

“He was at the diner with Juliet’s picture asking questions.” Grant fixed him with a hard stare. “Tell me there’s another explanation as to why he’s here other than he followed you from Seattle.”

Riordan blinked several times, then ran his hands through his hair and looked up at the ceiling. “Shit.” Air hissed out from between his teeth and he met Grant’s gaze. “I don’t think I was followed, but I was distracted. If the guy is good, he could’ve slipped under my radar.”

“We need to find out who he is,” Grant said.

“Get me his prints and I will.” Daniel glared at him. “I have a field forensics kit, so if he’s in the system somewhere, I can get an ID.”

Grant glared back. “I do have a fingerprint kit, but thanks.” He turned on his heel and stalked away several paces as he texted Autumn.

Hey, I need our new friend’s fingerprints. Think you can help me out?

Autumn texted back. One step ahead of you, Sheriff. Already saved his coffee cup and put it in a Ziploc bag. He never even noticed. By the way, he said his name is Charles. I’m not buying it, but that’s what he said.

Is he still there?

Really? Do you know any man who can turn down my peach pie?

He chuckled. I don’t think pie is the reason he’s sticking around, at least not the peach kind. Just don’t lay it on too thick or he may get suspicious.

Honey, this is not my first rodeo. Now do your job and get your cute butt over here.

Grant smiled. Yes, ma’am. I’ll be there in five.

He slid his phone back into his pocket and wiped off the smile as he faced Riordan. “I’m heading over to the diner to collect our visitor’s prints, maybe get a read on who he is. Do you want to come with or stay here?”

“I’d rather go with you, but if the guy recognizes me?”

“My thoughts exactly, although he already followed you this far so he knows you’re here somewhere,” Grant said. “You stay and I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

“Where is Juliet?”

The plaintive note in the detective’s voice wasn’t obvious, but Grant heard it. “She’s safe. And I don’t know if you’re aware, but she’s also an excellent shot.”

Riordan gave him a thoughtful look. “I suggested she get a gun shortly after I first met her, but I wasn’t at all sure she could handle it.
